Experienced, professional, and passionate
I love words. I love the way they look, the way they sound, and the way they can make you feel. It was this love of language that led me to pursue a degree in English Literature and then a career as a fully qualified and experienced secondary English teacher. I love reading other people’s work and genuinely get a kick out of helping people convey their ideas with the flair and fluency they desire and deserve.
Since childhood I have been a stickler for spelling, punctuation, and grammar and would mentally correct misspelt shop signs or examples of misappropriated commas. Those years of pedantry have paid off and help me to offer an efficient, thorough, and professional proofreading service. I have been proofreading for over 10 years; I started as an undergraduate student (at Lancaster University) offering help to international students who were extremely conscientious but struggled to convey their ideas with clarity, concision, and consistency.
I take proofreading and editing seriously and am continually seeking greater experience and knowledge. I am an associate member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) as well as a member of the Society of Young Publishers (SYP). As part of my continuing professional development I also act as a mentor to proofreaders and editors new to the industry or to freelancing.
I work with you
Rather than just proofreading a piece of work and making the necessary amendments I involve the customer so that they know what the error was and learn how to correct it for the future. I will happily provide a short summary of your common mistakes and even meet with you to discuss your work in greater detail.* Ultimately I want every student, individual, or business to achieve their potential and will assist them as much as I can without actually writing the work for them!
*meetings are restricted to in and around Wirksworth, Derbyshire and may incur a small additional fee
I love what I do
I enjoy reading about new topics and welcome essays, dissertations and theses on any subject. The range of subject matter has been as diverse as mechanical engineering to the decline of a species, from global telecommunications to a postcolonial reading of Shakespeare. I like this; it keeps me interested and excited and I am constantly learning.
