SEO – How Bad Spelling Can Make You Unfindable Online

Many companies use their website to attract clients. Part of creating an effective online marketing campaign is ensuring customers can find your site in the first place. This article briefly explains SEO and why misspellings can be detrimental to your business.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and is a process that companies undertake to ensure their website appears as highly in search results as possible. Search engines (like Google) routinely ‘scrape’ websites for their data. They look for keywords so when people enter terms into the search engine, appropriate results can be presented. You will appear higher in the results for several reasons, for example if you use the same term multiple times on your pages, if other sites link to you or if the specific terms are highlighted in some way on your website (either with metatags or with a typeface feature, like bold or underlining).

Consequently, if you have misspelled a term in multiple places then you will not appear very high in the search results for that term and may fail to attract potential customers as a result. Examples of this can be seen on the auction site eBay, as products listed with incorrect titles (e.g. many people list chairs as ‘chiar’) fail to show up in the search results for that specific term. Making yourself visible online is therefore not only about creating a well-designed website but also having your pages proofread. This can either be done by your company or by a professional proofreader like Fine Print to ensure peace of mind when it comes to SEO.
