Proofreading and editing rates and levels of service

Please note that the prices below are given as guides to the rates you would pay and the services you would receive. Please contact me for a tailored quote that meets your needs and specifications.

Prices start from £7 per 1,000 words

The rate you pay depends on a number of factors including the level of written English, the level of study, the timescale involved, and the level of service required. Essentially, I offer three levels of proofreading and editing services:

Standard proofreading

From £7 per 1,000 words

Standard proofreading involves making sure writing is free of mechanical errors – in spelling, punctuation, consistency, and some elements of formatting – and is grammatically correct.

Editorial proofreading

From £8 per 1,000 words

Editorial proofreading encompasses all the tasks in standard proofreading, plus a few minor tweaks to ensure clarity and correct word choice.

Copyediting

From £9 per 1,000 words

Copyediting involves all proofreading tasks and also improves phrasing and organisation to make the writing more effective.

NB: I am not prepared to rewrite academic work. Beyond the ethical issues involved there is also a chance of me misunderstanding your original text and, unintentionally, wrongly changing your work. If you have any questions about this please do not hesitate to contact me but please be aware that I may not be able to complete the work for you.

Examples

Here’s a single sentence, edited at the three different levels:

Original text: What makes a good editing jobs into a grate editing job, is keeping both the rules and the reader in mind.

Standard proofreading: What makes a good editing job into a great editing job is keeping both the rules and the reader in mind.

Editorial proofreading: What turns a good editing job into a great editing job is keeping both the rules and the reader in mind.

Copyediting: Keeping the reader as well as the rules in mind is what turns a good editing job into a great one.

About prices

Please note that there is a minimum charge of £10 for all proofreading and editing work.

Prices are tailored to the nature of the work and the customer’s requirements. Fees may be given based on the word count, an hourly rate or a total fee for the project. When an hourly rate is applicable charges are in line with the fees suggested by the Society for Editors and Proofreaders.

Work that can only be completed over a weekend or outside of standard office hours (9am to 6pm) will be charged at a rate of one and half (1.5) times the standard fee.

Work on referencing and bibliographies will be charged at an hourly rate of £20 due to the different nature of these tasks.

TIP:

The longer I have to complete the proofreading and editing work the lower the fee so, if you can, plan ahead and submit your work to me well in advance of the deadline rather than leaving it to the last minute.
